Shifting Home Renovation Trends: From Garages to Kitchens & Extensions
Over the years at Neways Group Ltd., we’ve noticed a fascinating shift in the types of projects clients are requesting. A few years ago, garage conversions dominated our diary. More recently, full home renovations – including kitchens and bathrooms – became the most common enquiry. And now? The strongest trend we’re seeing for 2025 and leading into 2026 is homeowners investing in extensions (again, including kitchens & bathrooms).
But what’s driving these changes?
For many families, it’s not simply about creating a “dream home” – it’s about making space work harder. Rising house prices and interest rates have made moving less affordable, so instead of searching for a bigger property, homeowners are choosing to reconfigure, extend, or modernise their current one.
Affordability Meets Necessity.
Neways Director, Louise Tingley has worked from a home-based space since the early 2000s. Coming from Australia, it’s not unusual, in fact, most Australian homes have a dedicated home office. 3 bed, 2 reception, plus an office is standard.
In the UK however, it’s only since the pandemic, that remote and hybrid working has influenced and impacted how we use our homes and it’s still not a standard feature of mainstream UK homes to have two receptions and a dedicated home office beyond bedrooms (heck! It’s still not even standard to factor in built in robes for real life daily clothes storage needs, but that’s a whole other discussion)!
Kitchens and dining spaces are no longer just for cooking and sharing meals together – they now often double as work zones, study hubs, and social spaces. Extensions allow families to expand without uprooting, giving them the breathing room to adapt as life evolves.
And this also increases the long-term value.
Renovations are increasingly seen as a strategic investment rather than a luxury. Homeowners are realising that a well-designed kitchen, bathroom, or extension adds significant long-term value to their property, while also improving their day-to-day lives.
Looking ahead, we anticipate seeing more need for:
Multifunctional Living Spaces – for families needing the benefits of more flexible spaces that can adapt to the increased demands of work, leisure, and schooling.
Luxury Kitchens & Spa Bathrooms – with homeowners seeking more premium finishes and bespoke designs we expect kitchens and bathrooms to remain top priorities within home renovations.
Garden Rooms & Outdoor Living – as families embrace indoor/outdoor living, somewhat inspired by Australian homes & lifestyle, entertaining, garden rooms and alfresco kitchens will continue to gain popularity in 2026 and beyond.
As trends shift, our commitment remains the same: delivering trusted, high-quality renovations with a fully comprehensive service – from concept to completion. Whether you’re dreaming of a modern kitchen, planning an extension, or considering a full renovation, our vetted and award-winning team is here to help.
And yes – we’re even taking our expertise overseas! We’ve been invited to renovate a property in Tenerife – an opportunity we couldn’t possibly say no to. And we may even venture back over to Australia to see what “European Influences” are impacting Australian home designs, and the innovations and trends coming out of Australia that can positively impact our own designs here in the UK!
It’s proof that whether local or international, our reputation for excellence continues to grow…
