Advocating for Change: Our Evening at the House of Lords

Last night, Simon and I (Louise) had the incredible honour of attending the Spring Parliamentary Reception at the House of Lords. A landmark evening for those of us who care deeply about the future of our industry.

Representing micro and SME domestic builders, we stood side by side with our colleagues from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), the National Association of Building Contractors (NABC), CITB, and People’s Partnership, united in a shared mission:

To advocate for mandatory licensing and stronger protections for homeowners, but also for honest tradespeople who are just as often left out of pocket and unsupported by the current system.

We heard from victims of rogue and cowboy builders, and frankly, their stories were devastating. Botched renovations, financial ruin, unsafe homes… It reinforced what we already know to be true: that integrity, transparency, and trust must be the gold standard across this industry.

We spoke with Michael and his Wife who shared that they had chosen a “builder” who’d quoted £40,000 for a wrap-a-round extension of their property in London. Immediately we knew how this story was going to end; that budget is NOT sufficient for the scope of works required.

Sure enough… a few months in and the builder informed the client they weren’t going to have enough money to finish the project. This is a scenario we see time and time and time and time again - it drives us to tears!!

What’s worse, is that this builder had done it before. There were over 20 cases where people in various parts of the country had endured similar experiences from this same “builder”. AND…. The aspect often not even considered; the Tradesmen working for him weren’t being paid!

It’s COWBOYS like this that impact the entire industry!

It’s why we go above and beyond to establish TRUST right from the start. We’re not in competition with those who are trying to undercut us. We won’t cut corners. We always have and always will pay our employees and contractors (on time)!

And we will continue to go the extra mile, to be third-party vetted, accountable, and committed to doing things the right way - even when it’s not the easiest or cheapest route - ensuring we continue to meet and uphold the strict standards set by the Federation of Master Builders, TrustMark and other organisations.

We’re incredibly proud to be part of this mission. To have a voice at the table, not just for ourselves, but for other small businesses doing good work, and for clients who deserve peace of mind in the place they call home.

This conversation is far from over, and last night ignited the hope that we’re not alone, change is possible, and it’s already happening….

Thank you to the FMB for hosting such a powerful and purposeful event!

I started my first 6-figure business in the music industry in my teen years, before studying a BA in Music (Opera Performance) with a minor in Music Education. Over the course of the next 15 -20 years, I immersed myself into the world of Music Therapy, which further lead to my intrigue and fascination with Aroma Therapy, and in more recent years, the art of perfumery.

I have been privileged enough throughout my career to have been able to work with Tony, Grammy, ARIA and BAFTA award winning writers, performers and producers.

I have a track record of helping sole traders and micro-companies create 6 and 7 figure businesses working from home.
